Book covers of L. M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables and the YA book Blackout

November Books

In November, our Book Club book will be L. M. Montgomery's classic Anne of Green Gables (Amazon | Bookshop.org). We are so thrilled to be discussing this beautiful novel. Our Buddy Read pick is a phenomenal short story collection by some amazing YA authors. It's Blackout (Amazon | Bookshop.org) by Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D. Jackson, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, and Nicola Yoon.

Here are the synopses:

Anne of Green Gables

"Eleven-year-old Anne Shirley has never known a real home. Since her parents' deaths, she's bounced around to foster homes and orphanages. When she is sent by mistake to live with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert at the snug white farmhouse called Green Gables, she wants to stay forever. But Anne is not the sturdy boy Matthew and Marilla were expecting.

"She's a mischievous, talkative redheaded girl with a fierce temper, who tumbles into one scrape after another. Anne is not like anybody else, the Cuthberts agree; she is special, a girl with an enormous imagination. All she's ever wanted is to belong somewhere. And the longer she stays at Green Gables, the harder it is for anyone to imagine life without her."

Blackout

"Six critically acclaimed, bestselling, and award-winning authors bring the glowing warmth and electricity of Black teens in love to this charming, hilarious, and heartwarming novel that shines a bright light through the dark.

"A summer heatwave blankets New York City in darkness. But as the city is thrown into confusion, a different kind of electricity sparks…

"A first meeting.

"Long-time friends.

"Bitter exes.

"And maybe the beginning of something new.

"When the lights go out, people reveal hidden truths. Love blossoms, friendship transforms, and new possibilities take flight.

"Beloved authors—Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D. Jackson, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, and Nicola Yoon—celebrate the beauty of six couples and the unforgettable magic that can be found on a sweltering starry night in the city."

December Books

We're excited to look ahead to December! Our Book Club book is Jean Meltzer's The Matzah Ball (Amazon | Bookshop.org), a fabulous romance that's perfect for the holidays. And for our Buddy Read pick, our Unabridged Ambassadors and current Buddy Readers will be voting on a fun YA book centered on New Year's. (Stay tuned to @unabridgedpod on IG for details!)

The Matzah Ball

"Oy! to the world

"Rachel Rubenstein-Goldblatt is a nice Jewish girl with a shameful secret: she loves Christmas. For a decade she’s hidden her career as a Christmas romance novelist from her family. Her talent has made her a bestseller even as her chronic illness has always kept the kind of love she writes about out of reach.

"But when her diversity-conscious publisher insists she write a Hanukkah romance, her well of inspiration suddenly runs dry. Hanukkah’s not magical. It’s not merry. It’s not Christmas. Desperate not to lose her contract, Rachel’s determined to find her muse at the Matzah Ball, a Jewish music celebration on the last night of Hanukkah, even if it means working with her summer camp archenemy—Jacob Greenberg.

"Though Rachel and Jacob haven’t seen each other since they were kids, their grudge still glows brighter than a menorah. But as they spend more time together, Rachel finds herself drawn to Hanukkah—and Jacob—in a way she never expected. Maybe this holiday of lights will be the spark she needed to set her heart ablaze."
