Breaking the Clock: 5 Books Where Time Is More Than Just an Illusion

Curated by Jen Moyers (@jen.loves.books)

Today, I'm sharing five reviews of books that play with time. These include books about time travel or time loops or alternate timelines. In my experience, they either really work or really don't. Fortunately, we've had some great luck with these time-centered novels.

For each book, I'll share an excerpt from our full review. All of these reviews were written by us, and you can click the links to dive deeper into each book. If you decide to purchase any of the books, our affiliate links to Bookshop.org and Libro.fm are in the full reviews. Okay, on with the books!

". . . the beauty of this book lies in its details. Alice herself is such a compelling character who is reflective and thoughtful and loyal. Her dad is an author, and there's a love of story that runs through the book that is just beautiful. I loved Alice's relationship with Leonard, who raised her as a single father and is so much a part of who she became. Her friendship with Sam is also a strong foundation for the book, another constant that she can count on.

"To say much more would take away the joy of discovering this one for yourself, but I urge you to pick it up as soon as you can." Click to read the full review.

Rachel Lynn Solomon's SEE YOU YESTERDAY - A Fabulous YA Time Loop Story (from Jen):

"I love a time loop story. Groundhog Day. Lauren Oliver’s Before I Fall. Kate Atkinson’s Life After Life. Russian Doll. And now? Rachel Lynn Solomon’s See You Yesterday takes its place among my favorites.

I’m regrettably late to Solomon’s work, but I’m so excited to read more—she excels at both YA and adult romance. In See You Yesterday, Solomon uses the time loop premise to explore exactly what a fresh start can mean." Click to read Jen's full review.

"Serle has such talent for writing about emotions in such a thoughtful and authentic way. She has a way of writing that just speaks to the heart. I marked so many quotations as I read. Especially the quotations that referred to Katy’s relationship with her mother. I am very close with my mom, and I could relate to Katy’s unmooring after losing her mother so much. In addition to this story of a daughter’s love for her mother, this book is also a love letter to Italy. The descriptions of Positano landscapes and the food (Oh! The food!) are magical. I Googled Positano several times while I read, and–sign me up…I am ready for an Italian summer too!" Click to read the full review.

"Friends, I did not see what was coming in Casey McQuiston's One Last Stop, and let me tell you - I was here for it! Longtime listeners know that I was a huge fan of Red, White, and Royal Blue, and I still think of that one as one of my most favorite romances ever! While there are some traits that are present in both books -- heartfelt characters with rich personalities and excellent banter -- this is a very different book from Red, White, and Royal Blue, and I can see how that could be jarring for some readers... but it did not diminish my love one bit! This one is much more speculative fiction with some fascinating twists and turns that go beyond the completely realistic realm, and I found it captivating." Click to read the full review.

"The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is the first book I’ve read by V. E. Schwab . . . I’ll definitely be reading more. What a brilliant, compelling, gorgeous novel. . . .

"Addie’s path is a winding one, and the novel’s twists and turns are gorgeous and unexpected. I had a hard time putting this one down, drawn completely into Addie’s story." Click to read the full review.
